Common Questions About Pigeon Removal & Our Services

Common Questions

Are Pigeon Nests Really That Bad?

Yes! Several reasons for that in fact…

For one thing they make a big mess and allow for pigeons to easily reproduce on your property and make for a potentially large infestation later on. Pigeons do not have a limit on the size of nest they create. Unlike small birds in trees, they are not little baskets sitting on a tree branch. Pigeons can create massive nests that span the entire square area of the space they choose to inhabit.

They will lay down massive beds of straw, sticks, trash, and their own poop to keep it together. Then they will relentlessly poop in one area to create massive piles of waste.

Their nests cause property damage from the trash and highly acidic poop they spread around. They also can spread disease through their waste. If diseased pigeon poop dries out and a strong wind comes along, it will blow all that dust from the waste all over the place for anyone who breathes it in can potential catch any viruses or bacteria contained in that dust.

As harmless as a pigeon nest may seem, they can be quite dangerous!

How Do I Get Pigeons To Stop Perching On My Window Sill?

Usually if there’s room on a window sill for pigeons there’s room for a row of bird spikes. They spikes them and will not try to perch on them. Spikes also work well for ledges and odd roof configurations where birds can congregate.

I Have Pigeons On My Roof, How Do I Get Them To Go Away?

Remove all areas they could have access to like ledges, overhangs, and if they’re on ridges you can put up a wire or spikes. Gel on the ridge caps can also help. Reflective items like holographic bird scare tape can startle pigeons enough to make them go as well. Combining these methods can have a strong and lasting effect.

Does Pigeon Repellent Gel Really Work?

Yes it does when installed correctly, and with the correct prevention hardware. Usually gel goes where Pigeons and birds like walking around to get to and from nesting and perching positions. Once hardware to keep them out is in place, gel is great way to keep them from even getting close to the blocked off areas. After that, birds will usually stay away as long as the hardware lasts. It can also be re-applied now and then if needed.

Are There Any Smells That Can Keep Pigeons Away?

Scents that have birds seem to not like include things like: cinnamon, pepper of all kinds, peppermint, citronella, garlic, generally spices and herbs that would have a strong and or pungent smell to them. Even a Vinegar spray seems to cause them to fly off. The key is deployment. You would need to get it where the birds are and replace it if weather or wildlife causes it to no longer be effective.

How Do I Know If I Have A Pigeon Infestation?

The first signs of an infestation are that you can hear them, and see their waste from nesting materials and poop piled up somewhere on your property. You can often see pigeons living on your roof overhangs or window sills.

Is It Really That Big of a Deal to Let Pigeons Live On My Property?

It really is a big deal in fact. It’s even potentially dangerous to allow pigeons to live on your property for an extended period of time. They are know to carry several diseases that can be infectious for humans. This includes diseases such as: Histoplasmosis, Candidiasis, Cryptococcosis, Psittacosis, Encephalitis, Salmonellosis, and E.Coli.

What Do Pigeons Hate The Most To Keep Them Away?

The Most Effective Methods of pigeon prevention are Tactile Deterrents & Access Limitation Hardware. This includes bird spikes, netting, wire mesh fencing for solar panels, ridge wires, and even sticky gel. Birds hate unstable surfaces and will not be able to enter blocked off areas, these solutions are permanent with not much maintenance required, if any at all.

While we believe the methods above are the most effective, there’s other methods you could try, they are as follows:

The next most effective method that you can use is prevention. Make sure to have no food or water sources on your property for birds. If they don’t have access to good perching, or food or water, they will probably find another place to live.

Pigeons really don’t like shiny or reflective surfaces that much, especially ones that move. One of the most effective things we’ve seen are reflective tape that is designed specifically for this purpose. It’s not just reflective, but also has random holographic patterns that when moving can create a lot of movement that startles pigeons. They really don’t like it and are likely to stay far away from it.

Fake Predators like rubber Owls and Snakes can have an effect, but often times birds will figure out it’s not a real threat since these objects don’t move and will in fact be stationary for long periods of time. The most effective use for these would be a temporary measure to scare them away while you implement a more permanent solution designed for effective pigeon control.

Quick Sudden Motion like sprinklers can be effective depending on the area you’re trying to prevent them from accessing. If you have them come on randomly where they’re congregating it can disperse them for a while. Keep in mind this may only have a temporary effect as well, results do vary on this method.

Loud Noises can startle Pigeons causing them to fly off such as clapping, whistles, air horns, anything loud and sudden that they wouldn’t hear as normal background sounds. Predatory bird sounds have been know to work as well, however keep in mind Pigeons are good at finding vantage points to look out for predators as well so predator noises may not always work.

Ultrasonic Devices are not something we recommended. This is not a verdict any of those products at all! We just don’t see evidence that there’s a consistent and effective outcome whenever these devices are used for pigeon removal and other bird abatement processes. Some say they work, others complain that they’re just not effective.
