How Pigeons Nests Can Cause House Fires

It’s probably hard to imagine how a birds nest can cause a house to burn down. But it’s not about the nest, it’s about what the nest causes, and that’s blocked air flow through your dryer vent.

According to FEMA, around 2,900 house fires are reported each year due to blocked dryer vents.

The most common cause of course is lint from the dryer itself getting into the vent and eventually clogging it. This is why it’s so important to clean your dryer vent out at least once per year to avoid buildup.

In addition to cleaning out your vent, you should also inspect the exhaust part that’s outside the home. It’s not a frequent thing, but now and then pigeons and other birds will crawl in and build a nest inside a vent.

Most vent’s are designed to prevent this from happening. However, sometimes they do fail or wear out giving birds and opportunity to nest.

So whenever you clean out your dryer vents, make sure to also inspect the exhaust and really the entire system from end-to-end in order to be sure you don’t have any problems.

If you do find a nest in your vent, or anywhere and you want the birds to be gone, just reach out and we’ll take care of it for you.
